Neurology is the medical speciality which diagnoses and treats diseases of the nervous system (brain, medulla, nerves) and muscles.
A consultation with the neurologist is requested by the general practitioner and may include specific explorations: Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electroneuromyography (ENMG), Evoked Potential test (EP), Neuropsychological assessment.
Hospitalisation may be necessary in some cases of emergency, monitoring or treatment.
Amongst the symptoms/pathologies most frequently treated by a neurologist are:
- Problems with memory and language, confusion and behavioural problems (Alzheimer’s disease, etc.)
- Headaches (migraine, etc.)
- Feeling unwell and loss of consciousness (epilepsy, etc.)
- Problems with walking, tremors, involuntary movements (Parkinson’s disease, etc.)
- Paralysis or loss of sensitivity in a limb, impairment of the cranial nerves (sight, hearing, smell, swallowing) whether transient (transient ischaemic attack [TIA], etc.) or more prolonged (multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular accidents, etc.)
- Pain and numbness (carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, neuropathies, etc.)
- Cramps, muscle stiffness and weakness (myopathy, myasthaenia, etc.)
